I sat there watching her, I am certain she didn't know she was being watched, but her amazing ability to take things in so fast captured my attention. WOW, was my thought as she seemed able to hold a conversation with everyone that walked through her line. Now this started out as a class assignment but quickly God was turning it into a lesson for me. What does your witness say when you aren't aware that people are watching? Oh yeah we all have the occasional bad day, but what does it say most days? I watched her as she took pride in a job that most would complain about. It's a job they would say, it helps with bills, but in my watching I was listening and more than once she said she loved her job, she liked meeting people and making them smile.
Amazing, in my mind I was thinking she would be perfect in ministry because even the people that didn't comply with the request on the front of her register never seemed to upset her. What was more amazing was the fact that she knew her customers well. I decided to get up get something after all I go down almost everyday. I get in line and today, I had something different. Right away she says, you aren't feeling well, I reply no, how do you know, do I look that bad, she said "No", when you feel bad you get a sprite. When your head hurts you get a coke and when you are in a good mood you get tea and sometimes you get food with it. I laughed she laughed.
Just as I wanted to tell her that I had been watching her and that God was going to use her someone came up. I started away from the register but I noticed the person didn't open their box, but she knew exactly what they had, she looked over while we were speaking, but who would have thought she saw that. The that was what they had been served more than 5 feet away. Grits, eggs, bacon and a biscuit, yes the customer says, with a smile. The customer then tells her that yesterday, she'd tried something different and was not pleased, but didn't come and complain because she liked her so much. She was polite and said thank you. Never being rude, not agreeing with the customer, keeping it friendly and approachable, and never bad mouthing her employer.
I learned a lesson from that young lady, that we as Christians have a lot to learn, we ask God for things and not all the time because we need them, but we give Him request for a lot of wants. We complain about our 9-5 that many would love to have. But she was genuinely happy about her job serving people. Her smile was genuine, she engaged each person that came to her register, she knew her surroundings. I was thinking God with her gift, and demeanor she would be awesome in ministry. Her witness says she loves to serve. She could be a great leader because she is a great server. She is not proud, but humble. She doesn't complain and enjoys the simple things in life. She pays attention to people, it's not just let me get them out of here so I can resume my personal conversation with my co-worker. She engages them treats each customer as if they were the most important person in the world and she is learning, I watch her eyes as they tell her things that she is taking in, making mental notes.
Then, it hit me, that not only had I been watching her, she watches me. Though we never talked about it she knew what made me feel better on what days, she knew my pattern and habits. So it made me say Lord please allow me to check my witness, because people are watching us more than they are listening to us. Not just in public, but on social media, in every area, of our lives someone is watching us, what we say, what we write, what we like on FB, what we tweet. I was amazed that just when we think it's just us and no one is looking they are. So if you are going to profess to be a Christian carry yourself like one at all times. People are watching, they are listening, they are reading. All of it is a part of your witness and what does your witness say about you?
